Rietvlei Dam, Pretoria

Client: City council of Pretoria

Designer: Sviridov, De Waal and Associates Inc.

Contractor: Grinaker Construction

Constructed between 1930-1934, this dam is one of the oldest major earthfill dams in South Africa. The dam is 32m high at the deepest point of the valley with a central concrete core and hand-packed rock upstream facing. A water treatment works, situated below the dam, supplies purified water to the city of Pretoria.

The raising of the dam was decided to increase its stability and the capacity of the spillway from 1,100m3/s to 2,500m3/s as well as to improve the security of the outlet works.

This Reinforced Earth® project received the South African Institute of Civil Engineering’s award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement of 1989. It was cited that the project displayed elements of engineering ingenuity combined with the successful handling of environmental factors.
