Mbabane Bypass, MR3 highway - Ngwenya/Oshoek border post to Manzini, Kingdom of Swaziland

Client: Kingdom of Swaziland Ministry of Works and Construction

Consulting Engineers: BCEOM / Otieno Odongo JV

Contractor: WBHO

Reinforced Earth (Pty) Ltd South Africa designed and supplied materials for the construction of full MSE abutments to seven bridges and mixed MSE abutments to two bridges, twelve MSE retaining walls and four massive MSE tiered fills.

The MSE-type structures eliminated the necessity for piling on all but two of the mixed abutment structures.

The tiered fills, Esitibeni, Qabalambadada and Mangwaneni, were preferred as an alternative to the initially designed incrementally-launched bridge structures that required span lengths of 40 to 60 metres to be constructed on piers 30 to 60 metres high.

Work commenced on the project in September 2004 and the highway opened for traffic on 8 May 2009.
